Guidance / Hallmarking

Hallmarking, and why it is the first thing on every page.

The Hallmarking Act 1973 is criminal law. It is an offence to describe an article as being of gold, silver, platinum or palladium, and to supply it in the course of a trade, when it is above the statutory exemption weight and carries no UK-recognised hallmark. This page sets out how we apply it.
